e&o in Athens
Athens is a vibrant city celebrating the old and new. With a history spanning over 3,400 years, it’s exciting to see new stories and experiences emerge.
As we count down to the opening of our first restaurant in Athens, we are enjoying the city as a ‘tourist’ and wanted to share a little ‘must do’ list.
The Acropolis
This ancient citadel likely appears on every visitor guide, but it is worth it. Located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city of Athens, the remains of several ancient buildings is not only an example of amazing architecture and history, but simply a thing of beauty. At night it stands brilliantly illuminated above the city and is a mesmerizing view from rooftops dotted around the city. Our e&o Athens rooftop is a particularly good spot to catch a glimpse of it in all its glory.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre
Literally a stones’ throw away from e&o Athens is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, home to the National Library of Greece, The Greek National Opera and The Stavros Niarchos Park. Roam the grounds of the park, in particular, the sunlit Mediterranean Garden celebrating Greece’s strong horticultural tradition with boxwood, coronilla, cistus, salvia, oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary, roses and euphorbias. Throughout the year there is a calendar of musical and operatic performances and the library carries historical documentation for research, including original transcripts.
National Garden
The warm weather in Athens makes it a treat to explore outdoor spaces. In the heart of Athens, in Syntagma Square you will find what was formerly known as the ‘Royal Garden’. Wander around all day in the shade of the palm trees and visit the zoo and two duck ponds.
Monastiraki Flea Market
This is Athens biggest and most famous flea market which you must visit for quirky vases, cups and plates. It runs throughout the week in the area around Monastiraki Square, but is at its most vibrant on a Sunday. Weave through the surrounding streets which carry an eclectic mix of crockery and home accessories. More recently there are clothes, bags, books and furniture.
